Our story
Why we do this.
Vel Care Alliance did not start with a business plan. It started with a teenager, and a change nobody expected.
Our founder, Rio, spent years in the corporate world before any of this. The turning point came through a close friend, a senior support worker, who was working with a teenage boy who was withdrawn, frustrated and difficult to reach.
Three years later, Rio saw a completely different young man: calmer, more responsive, more himself. That visible change was the spark. What had actually happened? It turned out the answer was patience, consistency, and someone who refused to give up.
Rio started doing the support work himself and found a kind of satisfaction his old career never gave him. A smile from a non-verbal teenager. A parent saying their child had a good day. When his business partner fell seriously ill, Rio could have walked away. He could not do it. He had watched too many teenagers start to come back to themselves, and he was not about to leave.

“I firmly believe we can make a difference in people’s lives. If we can make a teenager’s life even one percent better, that is a big win for us.”

The echidna
A name with a story behind it.
Our echidna came from one of our very first clients, from an Indigenous community here in WA, who told us what the echidna meant to her people. We wanted a mark that reflected the community we serve, not a stock symbol. It stuck.
We stay when it gets hard
The slow, difficult stretch is exactly where we dig in. Staying is the work.
We discover before we prescribe
We learn the person before we plan a thing. The program comes last, not first.
We follow the teenager's lead
What they reach for points the way. Our job is to notice it, and build on it.
A conversation, not a commitment
Come and meet us first.
No paperwork, no pressure. Tell us a little about your teenager, or someone on your caseload, and we will come to you.
